EDGE Judo Club receive Cash 4 Clubs grant

Harlow’s EDGE Judo Club has received a £750 grant from the Cash 4 Clubs scheme.

The funding initiative, which is financed by Betfair, in partnership with SportsAid, provides funding nationwide for grassroots sports clubs. The latest set of grants has been awarded to 18 sports clubs from over 300 applicants.

The grant will ensure the Essex club can continue to support their existing volunteer coaches. The money will be spent on UK Coaching Certificates to qualify two of the current volunteers and also to buy a video camera to be used for training purposes.

Mark Conway, Head Coach at the club, who were formerly known as Ju Hakuda Judokwai, said: "This is really exciting for us as we have just moved into our new dojo and the grant means we are able to start planning and implementing technical analysis sessions now we can purchase a video camera.

“We will be able to improve not only our coaches' qualifications but also our students' education and understanding of judo movements and develop our students' mental imagery as well as their physical ability."

Since forming in 2004, EDGE Judo, who are members of the British Judo Association, have firmly established themselves as one of the leading clubs in the region by focusing on educating and attracting newcomers to the sport to develop their self-confidence and fitness.

Their efforts were recognised by a star-studded judging panel which featured Rugby World Cup winner Will Greenwood, Dame Kelly Holmes, SportsAid CEO Tim Lawler and James Radford, Head of Growth at Sport England.

Former England rugby star Greenwood said: “As a judge on the Cash 4 Clubs panel it was exciting to read about some of the fantastic work being done by sports clubs across the country, particularly in some of the more deprived communities.

“I really believe in the power of sport to transform lives and there is no better place to start and develop as a sportsman than at a local club.  Funding for these clubs is therefore of the utmost importance, which is why it is great to see Cash 4 Clubs money going directly to where it can have the most impact.”

Betfair CSR Manager Georgina Corbett added: “Interest in the Cash 4 Clubs scheme since it launched has been phenomenal, with thousands of clubs from across the country having applied for funding.  Supporting grassroots sport is one of Betfair’s key aims and this initiative is central to delivering that.”
