Child protection procedures

Criminal Records Bureau Background Checks

As part of the British Judo Association’s Child Protection Policy all coaches/staff/volunteers working within the BJA must have a CRB background check completed.

We process the checks of all our existing staff/coaches/volunteers that are eligable for a check every 3 years approx.

All new BJA clubs must have all adult staff/coaches/volunteers listed on their application form checked prior to the club being accepted.

Officials requested to have a background check will receive a CRB application form from BJA Head Office.

Those required to do a check are asked to meet of of the BJA's document verifiers  to complete the process of document validation.

Club Welfare Officers that have completed the BJA Time to Listen Workshop and completed their CRB with the BJA can verify documents for volunteers in their own club/s.

Proof of Identify:

ONE of the following:-

  • Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Birth Certificate (Only valid if certificate issued with 12 months of birth)
  • EU National ID Card
  • HM Forces ID Card
  • UK Firearms Licence

Original documents only.  Copies are not acceptable.

Proof of Address:

TWO original documents from the following list, which confirms your current address.

•  Recent bank statement

•  Recent mortgage or insurance statement

•  Recent credit card statement

•  Current Council Tax bill

•  Recent utility bill

BJA Responsible Officials

The BJA has enlisted the help of Responsible Officials from all over the UK to assist in the document verifying process.

If you wish you can have your identity and address documents verified by one of the officials in your local area.  This will entail you arranging to meet the Responsible Office at a mutually convenient time and location eg: their clubs practice night or local judo event.

The Responsible Official will complete Section X of your CRB form after which they will forward the CRB form to BJA Head Office to complete the processing of your application.

Please note that these Responsible Officials are volunteers (with the exception of staff listed) in this process and are not being paid expenses for there role in this project.  Please don't ask them to make special trips to meet you.

Club Welfare Officers

Club Welfare Officers that have completed the BJA Time to Listen workshop and have had their CRB disclosure completed are authorised to complete disclosures (upto section X) for volunteers/coaches etc from their own club only.

BJA Staff

All BJA staff members can verify documents for members.  Please note all document checking must be carried out face to face and not via the postal system.
