12 Fighters set for European U23 Championships

GB Judo have today revealed the 12 fighters that will compete at this year’s European U23 Championships in Budapest, Hungary from 5-7th November.

Due to Covid protocols, restrictions on training, travel and limited access to competition across the GB Squads, the GB Performance Team felt it inappropriate to follow the standard selection criteria for the 2021 U23 European Championships.

Therefore, GB Judo have selected fighters from the British Judo World Class Performance Programme alongside Home Nation fighters who have been identified to have a proven track record at European level.

2019 European U23 and Junior Championship bronze medallist Yasmin Javadian (-52kg) leads the 12 strong GB Judo squad that will compete in the Hungarian capital.

She is joined by Zagreb Grand Prix 7th place fighter and former European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) champion Amy Platten (-48kg), recent Junior World and European Championship representative Sian Bobrowska (-52kg) and JudoScotland’s former EYOF bronze medallist Josie Steele (-57kg).

Lachlan Moorhead will be looking to add to his European Championship medal collection having claimed bronze at the Junior European Championships in 2019.

Moorhead is joined in the -81kg category by England Judo’s Louis Delsol. Josh Giles and Dylan Munro compete in the -60kg category.

Charlie Young who recently competed at the World and European Junior Championships is joins Michael Fryer who makes his major championship debut in the -66kg category.

Oliver Barratt and Max Gregory who recently helped Chris Skelley and Elliot Stewart as training partners to the Paralympic GB Judo Team at the Tokyo Paralympic Games compete in the -100kg category.

Also taking to the mat is Graeme MacLachlan who has been selected as a referee for the event.

British Judo Performance Director, Nigel Donohue, is looking forward to seeing the wider GB Judo team return to competition following the Tokyo Games: “Post Games, we are in a Return to Competition phase which includes a number of international competitions at varying levels.

“One such competition is the u23 European Championships taking place in Budapest, HUN on the 5-7 November.

“The team for this event has been identified by GB and the Home Nation programmes. These fighters have proven to have the potential to be competitive at this level of event and competing in a Championships provides additional experiences. Experiences that are invaluable in the development for fighters for Paris 2024 and beyond.

“We wish our team well at these Championships and look forward with interest to seeing what level of performance our team can deliver in an event that we have seen much success in, over the last 5 years.”
