5 GB judoka selected for World Junior Championships
June 30, 2022
GB Judo are pleased to announce the 5 judoka selected for the upcoming IJF World Junior Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador from 10 – 13 August.
With three European Junior Cup medals in 2022, Tatum Keen will compete in the -52kg category. Joining Keen is Hannah Wood. Poznan Junior European Cup gold medallist Wood will compete at the Commonwealth Games for Scotland prior to travelling to Guayaquil.
Completing the women’s team is Simone Cross (-70kg) who won a bronze medal at the Coimbra Junior European Cup.
For the men, Ethan Nairne is joined by club teammate Ryan Rijksen-Salman. Nairne, the 2022 Coimbra Junior European Cup bronze medallist, will compete in the -73kg category, whilst Rijksen-Salman competes in the -90kg following a 5th place finish at the Athens Junior European Cup this year.
Due to the number of athletes meeting the selection criteria, there will be no GB team entered into the team event.
Tim Ellis Performance Pathway Manager commented: “We have a great team heading out to Ecuador this summer who have all performed consistently at Junior European Cups this year. Historically the Junior World Championships, combined with consistent performances at junior level, are an important indicator for success at senior level. We are confident that the fighters selected will perform well at these championships. This will be the first time some of these fighters have competed outside of Europe and I am sure they will take the challenge in their stride with 2 of the GB Junior Coaches supporting them”
