5th for Moorhead at Oberwart European Open

On the final day of the Oberwart European Open, Lachlan Moorhead finished in 5th place in his first competition since winning Commonwealth gold.

After an opening round bye, Lachlan Moorhead (Matt Moorhead; Sheffield JC) defeated Jose Sotomayor (CUB) before a defeat in the Quarter-Finals to Vladimir Akhalkatsi (GEO) set up a Repechage contest against Benedek Toth (HUN).

As the clock hit the 6-minute mark Moorhead had amassed two penalty shidos but a great piece of newaza saw him apply an armlock to force Toth to concede the contest and ensure he would fight for bronze against Thomas Snijders (NED).

In the bronze medal contest, Moorhead was caught by Snijders and thrown for ippon score in the opening 60-seconds meaning he had to settle for 5th.

Jamal Petgrave (Andy Ede; Westcroft JC) defeated Milan Randl (SVK) in the opening round of the -90kg competition, before a Round 2 defeat against Mark Van Dijk (NED).

In the -100kg category Rhys Thompson (George Hyslop; Enfield JC) defeated Rafael Romo (CHI) in Round 1 before suffering defeat to 4th seed Mert Sismanlar (TUR).

In the +100kg category Andrew McWatt (Stuart McWatt; Garioch JC) was defeated by Daniel Allerstorfer (AUT) whilst Wesley Greenidge (Hyslop; Enfield JC) also suffered an opening round defeat to Yvo Witassek (GER).

Scott Cusack (Billy Cusack; Edinburgh JC) was defeated by Thomas Snijders (NED) in the opening round of the -81kg competition.
