GB Team Identified For 2017 Cadet European Championships

A 15 strong GB Cadet team has been identified for the 2017 Cadet European Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania from 30 June to 2 July.

Nominations and identification for the Cadet Europeans were made following the GB Cadet Strategy and Cadet Identification List which focuses on number of ippon scored, performance behaviours and competition performances.

The top five players in each weight category were then invited to the GB Trademark Day at the British Judo Centre of Excellence Sunday on 7 May with the full team identified off the back of that day by an Identification Panel.

The GB team sees a number of returning judoka though the majority will be making their debuts at this level. Amy Platten (-44kg) and Yasmin Javadian (-52kg), pictured above, have both had successful 2017s on the Cadet tour with three and two Cadet European Cup medals respectively. Josie Steele (-57kg) and Daniel Rabbit (-55kg), pictured below, have also medalled this year at Cadet European Cup level which has seen them identified for the GB team.

The GB judoka will also be entered into the team event to ensure that athletes can gain as much mat time as possible to support their development.

The cadet judoka will also be supported by coaches from Home Nations programmes; Gary Edwards (Scotland), who will also by team leader, Sandra Klinger (England) and George Bountakis (Wales). They will also be joined by referee Lisa Harrison who has been selected to officiate at the EJU event.

At least year’s Cadet Europeans in Vantaa, Finland, it was Chloe Nunn (-70kg) who secured a place on the medal rostrum with a bronze medal with Javadian and Kelly Petersen (-70kg) finishing seventh in their respective weight categories.

Jemima Yeats-Brown was the last British judoka to be crowned Cadet European champion back in 2011 while a number of current WCPP judoka have also medalled at the European Championships in recent years.

The action gets underway in Kaunas from 0730 UK Time (0930 local) on Friday 30 June and Saturday 1 July for the two days of individual competition while the team event on Sunday 2 July will start at the slightly later time of 0800 UK Time and (1000 local)
