Injury replacements for England and Wales Commonwealth Teams
July 22, 2014
Caroline Kinnane has been forced to withdraw from the England Commonwealth team after reporting a neck injury.
Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown, 18, steps into the field at -63kg.
England – Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown – -63kg
Based full-time at British Judo’s Centre of excellence in Walsall, Yeats-Brown is a 2011 European Cadets Champion and one of judo’s most exciting young talents. At the age of 16 the Tonbridge native made a breakthrough on the senior stage in 2012 with a hard-fought fifth-place at the Czech European Cup. One of her career bests has been a fifth at the European U21 Championships in Sarajevo last September.
She comes into the games having taken two bronze medals at the Junior European Cups in Wroclaw and Paks this month, with two more earlier in the year.
Her best result at senior level is a silver medal in the African Open in Port Louis late last year.
On her late selection she commented: “I’m really excited. I still can’t believe it. It’s like it’s all a dream and I’ll wake up in a minute.”
Wales – Brandon Dodge – -60kg
A late call-up to the Wales team, replacing the injured Kyle Davies, is Swansea-based athlete Brandon Dodge.
Dodge caused a stir in 2012 when he won the British Championships, beating GB number one Ashley McKenzie and Scotland’s James Millar to take a surprise gold medal.
His best international result was a bronze medal in the 2011 Malaga European Cup. He also took silver in the Northern Ireland Open and gold in the recent Kent International at Crystal Palace.
