Bronze for Javadian on Day 1 of Junior European Championships
September 12, 2019
It was bronze for Yasmin Javadian (-52kg) on day 1 of the Junior European Championships in Vantaa, Finland.
Following a bye in the opening round Javadian defeated Manon Monnard (SUI) in the second round to set up a quarter-final match against defending Junior European Champion Faiza Mokdar (FRA). Unfortunately, she was defeated by the experienced French player who eventually went on to defend her title in winning gold.
Javadian was progressed to the Repechage where she faced Aelina Mazitova (RUS). Victory saw her progress to the bronze medal match where she faced the vastly experienced Gultaj Mammadaliyeva (AZE). Mammadaliyeva collected three shido’s and was disqualified handing victory, and the bronze medal, to Javadian.
This bronze is the first medal Javadian has won at the European Championships after finishing 5th on three previous occasions at Junior and Cadet level.
Making his European Championship debut, Joshua Giles (-60kg) faced B.Tralhao Fernandes (POR) in the opening round. Victory saw Giles progress to the second round where he was narrowly defeated by eventual gold medallist Salih Yildiz (TUR).
Sian Bobrowska (-48kg) had a bye in her opening round before facing defending Junior European Champion Lois Petit (BEL) in the second round. Unfortunately, the experience of the Belgian was too much for Bobrowska and she was defeated.
Henry Wakes (-66kg) was defeated by Bruno Bansky (SVK) in his opening round match.
Tomorrow sees Kelly Petersen-Pollard (-70kg) and Lachlan Moorhead (-81kg) compete. Petersen-Pollard, seeded 1st, has a bye in the opening round and will face the victor of the opening round match between Kaila Issoufi (FRA) and Mina-Agneta Ricken (GER).
Moorhead also has an opening round bye and will face Junior world no.9 Giga Abuashvili (FRA) in the second round.
Action in Finland starts at 9am GMT with Final Block due to start at 2.30pm (GMT). You can catch all the action on the British Judo homepage and social media pages.
