Bronze for Javadian on day 1 of European U23 Championships

On day 1 of the European U23 Championships in Izhevsk, Russia, Yasmin Javadian (-52kg) won bronze for British Judo.

European Junior Championship bronze medallist Javadian, who has recently started a dentistry degree at Birmingham University, defeated World Junior ranked number 7, Martina Castagnola (ITA) in the opening round in a Golden Score that lasted 4minutes and 30seconds.

In the quarter-final Javadian faced 2018 European Junior Championship silver medallist and current World Junior ranked number 5, Annika Wurfel (GER). Unfortunately, Javadian amassed three penalty shido’s handing victory to Wurfel, meaning she was progressed to the Repechage to face Teja Tropan (SLO). Javadian defeated Tropan in the Repechage after her opponent amassed three penalty shido’s and advanced to the bronze medal match to face the 2018 World Junior Championship bronze medallist, Aleksandra Kaleta (POL).

In the bronze medal match Javadian defeated her Polish opponent in a little over 1 minute by Uchi-mata to add European U23 Championship bronze to the European Junior Championship bronze medal she won earlier this year.

Tomorrow Lachlan Moorhead (-81kg), who also became European Junior Championship bronze medallist this year, is in action. He is drawn in Pool B and will face Georgi Gramatikov (BUL) in the opening round.

On the third and final day of competition, last year’s World Junior Championship bronze medallist Shelley Ludford (-78kg) has been drawn in Pool D where she will face former World Cadet Championship bronze medallist, Jovana Pekovic (MNE) in the opening round.

Daily coverage of the European U23 Championships starts with the Elimination Rounds at 7:00am (GMT) with Finals following directly after the first rounds. You can watch all the action live on the British Judo homepage.
