Obituary: Dave Cotterill
July 21, 2020
It is with our deepest regret we wish to inform you that Dave Cotterill of Bromsgrove Judo Kwai sadly passed away on July 18th 2020 age 67.
Judo Dave or JD to all his friends, family and students, touched the lives and hearts of so many through his beloved Judo, over the years.
Dave had been the heart and sole of Bromsgrove Judo Kwai ever since he became one of the lead coaches in the 80’s. He was an inspiration to all even though he would of admitted he wasn’t.
It was clear to see Dave truly lived and breathed Judo. As a coach Dave was humble and passionate in his teaching and was always eager to pass on his knowledge and experiences of Judo to his students, making time for all.
He never missed a session, always the first to turn up early to ensure the mats were out, and always the last to leave. Likewise with competitions and gradings Dave never once missed one of his students fighting. He could often be heard loudly shouting support followed by one of his many catchphrases “there goes another cha-ching“. This was just one of the ways Dave’s infectious big loving and loyal personality would fill a room.
Dave gained his 3rd Dan in 2014 at the age of 61, proving it is never to late, even though he didn’t think he was worthy of it, but he truly was in so many ways.
Dave was kind, caring with a golden heart, always wanting the best for his students regardless of medals, it was always the taking “A-part” that counted.
Undoubtedly through Dave’s magic and love of Judo, he has left an immeasurable memory on all our hearts and will always be with us and never will be forgotten.
Dave is testament and exact proof that Judo is a way of life and how Judo becomes an extension of the family. I’m sure Dave would agree that the party isn’t over yet!
Our thoughts and Judo love are with his family, friends and extended Judo family at this sad time.
