July 07, 2023
GB Judo are pleased to announce the 6-strong team selected to compete at the IBSA European Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from 5th – 10th August.
Daniel Powell has been in scintillating form since his return to the sport in 2022. The J1 -90kg fighter claimed silver at the IBSA World Championships in 2022 and has continued that form into 2023 as he won silver at the Egyptian Grand Prix and bronze at the Portugal Grand Prix.
Powell has a 5th place finish at the 2019 European Championships as his best result on this stage but will be looking to add to his recent impressive form in Rotterdam.
In the J2 +90kg category Chris Skelley (Haltemprice JC) is reunited with best friend Jack Hodgson (Terry Alltoft; Grimsby Judo Club) who makes a welcome return from injury.
Skelley is currently ranked number 1 in the world rankings, a position he claimed from Hodgson following his injury in 2022.
Skelley has tasted European success in the past as he won gold at the 2017 European Championships in Walsall whilst Hodgson was a bronze medallist in 2019.
Connah Anders (Fitzroy Davies; Hardy Spicer 83) will compete in the J1 -73kg category. Anders recorded a 5th place finish at the 2022 European Championships in Calgari, Italy.
Another fighter who finished 5th at those 2022 championships was Evan Molloy (Mark Burbridge; Devizes JC). The J2 -90kg fighter also registered a 7th place finish at the 2022 World Championships and has already had podium success in 2023 as he won bronze at the Portugal Grand Prix.
In the J2 +70kg category Kirsten Taylor (David Scobie; Tayside JC) will be in action. The Scottish fighter registered a 4th place finish at last years European Championships before a 7th place finish at the World Championships.
