British Schools Champions crowned on day one of Championships in Sheffield

Day one of the British Schools Judo Championships saw the school years 8,9,10 and 11 battling it out on the tatami for the title of British Schools Champion.

Over 350 judoka took to the mats today in front of a large and supportive crowd, with a further 250 now ready for tomorrow’s action.

The day started with the awarding of the Ken Webber Trophy, presented to the outstanding Junior Referee of the year at last year’s competition. Junior Referee, Louis Norton, picked up the Ken Webber Trophy for his performance at the 2015 British Schools Championships.

Louis also collected the Young Referee of the Year Award at British Judo’s Annual Awards in November 2015.

The Jerry Hicks Trophy, went to Junior Table Official, Jonathan Lile, who was unfortunately not present to receive the award.

The competition then followed with medals awarded across a variety of weight and age categories. The full results are available to download here.

Competition begins at 10am tomorrow, with action from years 6, 7, 12 and 13 to come. Photos from today’s competition can be viewed on the British Judo facebook page here.

Photos will be available purchase from http://www.mikevarey.com/ from Tuesday 5th April.
