March 07, 2021
Three British Judo fighters were in action on the final day of the Tashkent Grand Slam at the Humo Arena.
In the -90kg category, Max Stewart had an opening round bye before defeating the 2019 European Games silver medallist Li Kochman (ISR) in Round 2, a waza-ari score enough to see him progress to Round 3. In Round 3 he was defeated by the current European Championship bronze medallist Mammadali Mehdiyev (AZE).
In a shock result Natalie Powell who entered Tashkent as the top seeded -78kg fighter, was defeated by 18-year-old Iriskhon Kurbanbaeva (UZB) in Round 2, following an opening round bye. Powell, who was a waza-ari score down, went on the attack but was countered and thrown for a second waza-ari.
Sarah Adlington (+78kg) was narrowly defeated by Ivana Maranic (CRO) in the opening round, a waza-ari score enough to see Maranic progress to Round 2.
