GB Adaptive Team sweep up the medals at Virtus Oceania Asia Games

At the Virtus Oceania Asia Games in Brisbane, the GB Judo Adaptive Team enjoyed a medal haul that saw the team win a total of 13 medals.

Skye Westwood (Rush Judo; Matt Rush) got the GB medal train rolling. She won her opening contest with ease, defeating her Australian opponent with a waza-ari throw before transitioning into newaza to register an ippon score.

Teammate Nikki McDermott (South Shields; Joe Foster) lost her opening contest against her Australian opponent who had a significant weight advantage over her. McDermott produced a flurry of attacks but was eventually countered for an ippon score.

Westwood and McDermott met in the final contest of the Round Robin. Westwood caught McDermott with her trademark hari-goshi for ippon score to add the Oceania Asia Games title to her impressive collection of titles. McDermott finished with a bronze medal.

Joshua Hughes (Wirral JC; Chris Soakell) who was making his debut following his recent classification, faced a strong Japanese opponent and current All Japan Adaptive Champion. Hughes switched from right to left with ease and caught his opponent with a throw for ippon score to book his place in the final.

Hughes dominated the contest throughout and caught his Australian opponent with a waza-ari score to win gold, much to the disappointment of the expectant home crowd.

Christopher Murphy (Shettleston; Alex Reid) topped the -90kg podium following some impressive displays which saw him register two ippon victories.

After leading the team at the Opening Ceremony on Friday, Mikey Lomas (Miramar; Andrew Parton) claimed gold in the overall +90kg category and II1 category, with teammate Stuart Jackman (Swindon JC; Lee Adams) taking the overall silver medal and II3 gold medal.

Joshuha Hodkinson (SKK; Pete Blood) won overall gold in the -66kg category whilst teammates Thomas Mawdsley (Mill JC; Colin Mawdsley) picked up an overall bronze medal and the II1 gold and Stanley Walker (Rush Judo; Matt Rush) claimed silver in the II2 category.

Reflecting on the day, Team Leader Sami Smithson said:

“It has been a very successful day for the team with some brilliant judo on display. We have seen some exceptional performances from the team and we have all made new found friendships through the power of sport and judo.”
