GB Veteran Success at the Las Vegas World Championships

British Judo secured 11 medals at the 2024 Veterans World Championships in Las Vegas, including 1 gold, 4 silver, and 6 bronze, in an outstanding week of competition.

The championship kicked off with Team GB setting a confident tone for the event. Mark McCallum was the first to secure a podium place, fighting his way to a silver medal in the M8 +100kg category. Additionally, Fred Itose earned a bronze in the M6 +100kg category, and David McGuire took bronze in the M8 -100kg category, showcasing the strength and determination of British Judo from the very start.

Although Day 2 brought no medals, Day 3 proved to be a standout for Team GB, with Shaun Mitty becoming the first and only British gold medalist of the tournament in the M5 -90kg category. Mitty’s win was a major milestone, reflecting his dedication and hard work leading up to the global competition. Adding to the success, James Hornsby claimed silver in the M4 -81kg category, while Ant Sayers secured bronze in the M5 -90kg category.

Team GB finished strong on the final day, with five athletes contributing to the medal count. Fiona Chan, British Judo’s Female Veteran Athlete of the Year, earned a well-deserved silver medal, alongside Kay Andrews, who also claimed silver in her division. The day continued with Caroline Rawlings, Caroline Brayson, and Colin Francis, our Male Veteran Athlete of the Year, each claiming bronze, bringing the tournament to a successful close.

The GB veterans return home with immense pride in their achievements and the unwavering support of the Judo community. Their outstanding success in Las Vegas serves as an inspiring example for the next generation of British judoka.
