Your judo journey
Beginning anything new can feel a little overwhelming but don’t worry we’ve got you.
It’s quite easy to progress through judo as it is a very progressive sport. For kids between the ages of 5-7 we have the Sho Awards. There are 9 separate awards which all focus on fun while teaching the physical, technical, social and psychological skills needed to be a good judoka.
MON GRADES
At 8, everyone moves on to the Mon Grades which you can do until the age of 17. Here there are 18 awards, again all very progressive.
Although available until 17 years of age, at 14 judoka can transfer to the Kyu Grade system which takes them a step closer to the Dan Grade System and the coveted black belt.
KYU GRADES
Kyu Grades are open to any judoka over the age of 14 and your Mon Grades can convert into a Kuy Grade so you don’t have to start at the beginning again, if you have been doing judo for some time.
There are 6 Kyu Grades:
Once these are completed a judoka moves on to the Dan Grade System.
DAN GRADES
The Dan Grade system is aimed at judoka who are 15 years and over and have completed all the Kyu Grades. However judoka can begin to collect points towards their 1st Dan from the age of 14.
There are 10 Dan Grades in total and to gain these belts requires considerable skill and commitment to judo.
