What is Kata?
Kata literally means ‘form’ and is the practice of specific sequences of judo techniques and movements. It is a wonderful exercise for both juniors and seniors to develop their overall judo technique and understand the principles behind them.
There are kata that involve familiar judo techniques used in randori, kata for self defence, kata for physical conditioning and kata that help preserve judo’s history – a sort of living judo museum.
Kata as an important part of judo has four levels of BJA awards that judoka can attempt as they develop their skills and knowledge, as well as a number of competitions both national and international. Whatever your interest in kata there is a very active BJA Community to support and help you.
