Giles Claims Silver in Paris
February 02, 2024
With less than 6 months to go until the Paris Olympic Games, Chelsie Giles claimed silver on the opening day of the Paris Grand Slam.
Giles, who was competing for the first time since taking bronze at the European Championships in November, entered the Paris Grand Slam seeded 3rd.
Giles had an opening-round bye before defeating Sofia Asvesta (CYP), Amber Ryheul (BEL) and Sosorbaram Lkhagvasureb (MGL) to win her Pool and progress to the Semi-Finals.
Giles secured her place in the Final with a victory against Ariane Toro Soler (ESP) to face Tokyo Olympic Champion, Distria Krasniqi (KOS).
There was little between the pair, who had met on four previous occasions, however, it was Krasniqi who registered a waza-ari score in the final 90 seconds of the contest to take the lead. It was enough to see her take the gold, meaning Giles had to settle for silver.
Silver for Giles was an improvement on her previous best result at the Paris Grand Slam when she placed 5th in 2022.
