Grant for Barnsley Judo Club is just champion!
Junior members of Barnsley Judo Club will have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to train with a champion during a special day-out in London.
The club, the town’s sports club of the year in 2011, will use a grant of £2,000 to take its junior section to the Olympic host borough of Newham for the ‘train with a champion’ event hosted by the British Judo Association at Sportsdock, the USA judo team’s Olympic base.
The grant is from the Barnsley 2012 Aspiration and Achievement Fund, set up to encourage community initiatives after Barnsley formed an innovative partnership with Newham in 2008 as a way of spreading the legacy of the Olympics.
A number of Newham-based judo clubs, many with a long-established and rich judo heritage, will be at the event.
Eddie Newton, head coach at the Barnsley club, said: “We are so grateful for the grant because the club is looking to make long lasting and fruitful relationships as a result of this. It will be a day our juniors will remember for the rest of their lives.
“We’re also looking forward to meeting all the head coaches from the other clubs and exchanging ideas on how to develop our sport in these challenging times.
“It will be a great day and without the grant, and the hard work of Karen French, the British Judo Association London development officer, it wouldn’t be happening.”
