For the past three years, Harrow School’s Judo Club has been providing taster sessions to Year 6 pupils at Norbury School.
The initiative introduces children to judo’s unique blend of physical activity, mental discipline and character-building values, while also offering insight into Japanese culture.
Judo at Harrow is organised by physics teacher Matt Glossop (5th Dan). The sessions are designed to teach the fundamental principles of judo, including safe falling techniques and basic holds. The sessions also introduce a few key terms, enhancing the children’s understanding of the sport’s Japanese origins and traditions.
Glossop explained that: “Kano’s philosophy for judo is rooted in self-improvement, mutual respect and ‘maximum efficiency with minimum effort’, making it an ideal addition to any school PE curriculum.
“The moral code of judo reinforces school values, while training in our unique Olympic sport builds resilience and character. It has been a privilege to share these principles with local primary school children.”

Harrow School has a strong judo tradition, with its team achieving national and regional success under the guidance of Glossop and former British Champion Paul Ajala (6th Dan). The school’s judoka lead the primary school taster sessions, sharing their competitive experiences while mentoring the young participants.
A highlight of the programme is the opportunity for the Norbury School pupils to throw the Harrow players – a fun and empowering exercise that builds confidence and develops enthusiasm for the sport.
The judo project is part of Harrow School’s Shaftesbury Enterprise programme, whose purpose is to engage purposefully with national and local organisations, including schools, to improve educational outcomes for young people.
It also aligns with Harrow School Judo Club’s commitment to strengthening community ties and promoting judo as a sport that fosters discipline, respect and resilience – values that extend far beyond the tatami.
