Howell and Stewart in action on day 5 of the World Championships

Gemma Howell and Max Stewart were in action for British Judo on day 5 of the IJF World Championships in Budapest.

Howell had an opening round bye before facing former World Championship silver medallist, Maria Perez (PUR) in Round 2.

The contest entered Golden Score and with both fighters with two shidos each to their name, neither could afford a third. However, it was Perez who was awarded a 3rd shido, meaning Howell progressed to Round 3 to face Yoko Ono (JPN).

In the Round 3 contest there was nothing between the two fighters as the contest entered Golden Score, but it was Ono who was able to find the winning score to progress to the Quarterfinals.

Max Stewart booked his place in Round 2 after his first-round opponent, Aleksejs Zarudnevs (LAT), was disqualified for a head throw.

He faced the 2018 World Championship bronze medallist, Kenta Nagasawa (JPN), in Round 2. The Japanese fighter defeated Stewart by osaekomi for an ippon score.

There is no British representation on Friday, so next to compete for British Judo will be Sarah Adlington, who takes to the tatami on Saturday and will face Sara Alvarez (ESP) in the opening round.

The Preliminary Rounds are due to start at 09:00am (BST) with Final Block scheduled to commence at 16:00 (BST).

British Judo will bring you a recap of how all your British fighters perform each day and you can follow the action on the British Judo social media channels. You can also watch the action live on the British Judo homepage.
