IBSA World Games get underway in Birmingham

The IBSA World Games got underway today with the University of Birmingham playing host to the judo competition.

There was just one GB judoka in action on the opening day as Connah Anders (Fitzroy Davies; Hardy Spicer 83) competed in the J1 -73kg category.

Following an opening-round bye, Anders was defeated by Shokhrukh Mamedov (UZB) in Round Two after getting caught and thrown for ippon score in the second exchange.

Unfortunately for Anders there was no reprieve, by way of the Repechage, after Mamedov was defeated in the Quarter-Final.

Tomorrow will see four GB judoka in action as Paralympic Champion and recent IBSA European Championship silver medallist Chris Skelley (Haltemprice JC) takes to the tatami alongside Jack Hodgson (Terry Alltoft; Grimsby Judo Club) in the J2 +90kg category.

World number one, Skelley has an opening round bye and will face the victor of the opening round contest against Yordani Fernandez-Sastre (CUB) and Li Peng (CHN). Hodgson meanwhile will face Tokyo Paralympic silver medallist Revaz Chikoidze (GEO) in the opening round.

In the J2 -90kg category, IBSA European Championship bronze medallist Evan Molloy (Mark Burbridge; Devizes JC) will face Tokyo Paralympic silver medallist Benjamin Goodrich (USA) in Round Two, following an opening round bye.

IBSA European Championship bronze medallist Kirsten Taylor (David Scobie; Tayside JC) has an opening round bye in the J2 +70kg category and will face the winner of the opening round contest against Mariana Mederos (URU) and Dursadaf Karimova (AZE).

Unfortunately, current World silver medallist and recent European silver medallist Daniel Powell has withdrawn due to an injury sustained at the European Championships.
