January 28, 2023
On day two of the IJF Portugal Grand Prix, Lachlan Moorhead (Sheffield JC; Matt Moorhead) was the pick of the British judoka in action as he finished 7th in the -81kg category.
Moorhead defeated Kell Berliner (USA) in Round 2 following an opening-round bye. Moorhead registered a waza-ari early in the contest before securing victory with a taio-toshi for a second waza-ari score.
Moorhead overcame Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal (DOM) in Round 3 to progress to the Quarter-Final to face Hievorh Manukian (UKR).
With 60-seconds of the contest remaining, Manukian applied a strangle to win the contest which saw Moorhead progress to the Repechage.
Unfortunately, Moorhead was defeated in his repechage contest against former World Champion Sagi Muki (ISR). Moorhead went a score up early in the contest before Muki registered an ippon score to progress to the bronze medal contest. The result saw Moorhead finish in 7th.
In the -70kg category, Mima Yeats-Brown (Ryecroft Judokwai; Ian Oliver) defeated Anastassiya Mayakova (KAZ) in Round 2, following an opening round bye. Yeats-Brown registered a waza-ari score in the opening 30 seconds before transitioning into an osaekomi hold down and forced her opponent to tap out.
In the 3rd round contest, Yeats Brown was judged to have performed a head dive and was disqualified, allowing her opponent, Elena Dengg (AUT), to progress.
Also competing in the -70kg category was Kelly Petersen-Pollard (Hardy Spicer; Fitzroy Davies) who defeated Anastassiya Morozova (KAZ) in Round 2, following an opening round bye. Petersen-Pollard threw her opponent for waza-ari before transitioning into an osaekomi hold down for ippon score.
In Round 3, Petersen-Pollard was caught in the opening exchange by Margit De Voogd (NED) and thrown for ippon score.
In the -81kg category, Vladimir Oleinic proved age is just a number as the 39-year-old defeated 20-year-old Iftach Badash (ISR) in the opening round by an osaekomi hold down for ippon score.
Oleinic gave another positive account of himself in his second-round contest against Achraf Moutii (MAR), forcing the 3rd seed to Golden Score
Competing in an -73kg category, Eric Ham (Glossop JC; Geoff Ham) was defeated by 8th seed and defending bronze medallist Ankhzaya Lavjargal (MGL) in the opening round.
