British Judo are saddened to hear of the passing of Wrekin Star Judo Club (WSJC) President John Goodwin (2nd Dan).
Former milkman John, who was well known locally as “Judo John”, began at Wrekin Judo Club in 1965.
He was a passionate supporter and advocate for Judo in the community and has helped thousands of children and adults take their first steps into Judo and beyond. Amongst the club’s many successes in competitive Judo are Kelly Edwards representing Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympic Games and silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, as well the development of a numerous new coaches and Dan Grades.
As Club President, John remained an active club man until his death. He will be fondly remembered and missed by all of the members, Committee and Coaches, whose thoughts are with John’s family.
Gareth Mapp (5th Dan) WSJC Coach said: “John was a lovely man and an inspiring character that could never see a reason why you would not do Judo, however difficult the circumstances. He has been a presence for all of us throughout our time in Judo and we will all miss him greatly. He was very proud that the club he had been with for fifty eight years is still going from strength to strength and we will continue to celebrate his part in that”.
British Judo would like to pass on their condolences to John’s family and friends at this difficult time.
