OBITUARY: ROY FRANCIS
September 27, 2022
British Judo is saddened to learn of the passing of Aireborough Judo Club founder Roy Francis.
Roy, who founded Aireborough Judo Club in 1964, had been involved in judo for over sixty years as a referee and long-standing Committee member of the Yorkshire and Humberside area.
A qualified referee, 5th Dan and the National Examination Director for many years Roy has guided thousands of judoka to their coveted Black belt having coached at Aireborough Judo Club twice a week since 1966.
Roy started his judo career in 1958 when he joined Otley Judo Club where they trained on straw mats. In 1961, he was made Honorary secretary, a position he held until his death. In 1966 Roy achieved his 1st Dan and completed his coaching qualifications before becoming an examiner in 1976 and progressed through his Dan grades and was awarded his 5th Dan in 2017.
Following Roy’s passing, Aireborough Judo Club shared the sad news on their Facebook page.
“It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that the founder of Aireborough Judo Club, Roy Francis passed away on Friday after a long illness. I loved him very much as did so many others in our judo family. I know he will be remembered fondly by countless judoka, past and present. He was always a familiar and friendly face at the various competitions around the country. He was always happy to give advice and instruction. His vast knowledge and expertise of the sport will be a great loss for all. Roy’s club, our club, will continue in the spirit he started all those years ago, that of a welcoming atmosphere and the judo ideals.”
Our thoughts go out to Roy’s family, friends and all those at Aireborough Judo Club at this very sad time.
