December 05, 2023
Daniel Powell marked his return from injury by taking silver at the IBSA Tokyo Grand Prix this morning.
Competing in the J1-90kg category, Powell defeated Dostonjon Sariboev (UZB), Kittikai Chaisin (THA) and 2ndseed Bauyrzhan Batkhuyag (MGL) to secure his place in the final to face number one seed, Oleg Cretul (MDA).
In consultation with the British Judo medical team, the precautionary decision was taken to withdraw Powell from the final. The result saw Powell take the silver medal, but most importantly secure valuable Paralympic ranking points.
Chris Skelley and Jack Hodgson were both in action in the J2+90kg category. Both were defeated in their opening round contests by Zhurkamyrza Shukurbekov (KAZ) and number one seed Aloviddin Jurakulov (UZB) respectively.
Both fighters progressed to the repechage and straight to the bronze medal contests. Skelley was defeated by Jurakulov whilst Hodgson was defeated by Yerlan Konkiyev (KAZ). The result saw both fighters finish 5th.
In the J2+70kg category, Kirsten Taylor had an opening round bye before a round two defeat to Zarina Raifova (KAZ). In the Repechage Taylor secured her place in the bronze medal contest with victories against Clara Allardyce (USA) and Taylor Gosens (AUS). Taylor placed 5th following defeat to Aidana Gazizkyzy (KAZ).
Evan Molloy overcame Otabek Irisbekov (UZB) in the opening round but was defeated in round two by Daniel Goral (GER) in the J2-90kg category. In the repechage, Molloy was defeated by eventual bronze medallist, Zviad Gogotchuri (GEO) to place 7th.
Competing in just his second IBSA Grand Prix, Miles Soloman defeated Osvaldas Bareikis (LTU) in round two, following an opening-round bye. Soloman then progressed to the repechage following defeat to number one seed Olzhas Orazalyuly (KAZ).
Soloman defeated Ruben Goncalves (POR) to secure 7th place but was unable to progress further as he was defeated by Donghoon Kim (KOR).
Making his return to competition at the age of 50, Darren Harris competed in the J1-60kg category. Harris defeated Ismayil Murdov (AZE) in round two, following an opening-round bye, before defeat to eventual silver medallist Abdelkader Bouamer (ALG).
