Renshall bags bronze in Tel Aviv
February 17, 2023
Lucy Renshall (SKK; Pete Blood) added another medal to her ever-growing Grand Slam medal haul as she finished day two of the Tel Aviv Grand Slam with bronze.
Following an opening-round bye, Renshall who entered as the number two seed, overcame an 8-minute round-two contest against Florentina Ivanescu (ROU) to set up a quarter-final contest against Maylin Del Toro Carvajal (CUB).
Del Toro Carvajal progressed to the semi-finals courtesy of two waza-ari scores meaning Renshall advanced to the repechage to face Renata Zachova (CZE).
With nothing between the pair, the contest entered Golden Score where a great change of direction by Renshall saw her register a waza-ari score to progress to the bronze medal contest.
Renshall faced Katharine Haecker (AUS) in the bronze medal contest, an athlete who she was defeated by at the recent Judo Masters event in Jerusalem.
Renshall did not let that phase her as she capitalised on Haecker going to ground and showed her strength in newaza to pin her opponent in an osaekomi hold down for ippon score, to win her 9th career Grand Slam medal.
Kelly Petersen-Pollard (Hardy Spicer; Fitzroy Davies) defeated Rachael Hawkes (IRL) in the opening round courtesy of some great work in newaza, before suffering a second-round defeat to Martina Esposito (ITA) after picking up a third shido in Golden Score.
There was also a second-round exit for Jemima Yeats-Brown (Ryecroft Judokwai; Ian Oliver) in the -70kg category. Yeats-Brown defeated Aleksandra Samardzic (BIH) in the opening-round before losing to Gabriella Willems (BEL) by a single waza-ari score.
In the -73kg category, Eric Ham (Glossop JC; Geoff Ham) defeated Parahat Nazarov (TKM) in the second round following an opening-round bye. Nazarov picked up a 3rd shido in Golden Score. Ham was then defeated by eventual Pool winner, Magdiel Estrada (CUB) in Golden Score in Round 3.
In the opening round of the -63kg category, Gemma Howell (Wolverhampton JC; Bill Kelly) was defeated in Golden Score by 8th seed Laura Fazliu (KOS).
Competing in the -81kg category, Lachlan Moorhead (Sheffield JC; Matt Moorhead) was defeated by Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal (DOM) in round two, following an opening round bye.
