Tough final day at Tel Aviv Grand Slam
February 18, 2023
It was a tough final day for GB judoka at the Tel Aviv Grand Slam in Israel.
Four GB judoka were in action on the third and final day of action following an opening two days that saw Chelsie Giles (Coventry Judo Club; Coventry Judo Club) and Lucy Renshall (SKK, Pete Blood) claim gold and bronze respectively.
Following his silver medal at last weekend’s Sofia European Open, Harry Lovell-Hewitt (Stroud JC; Richard Neale) made the step up to compete on the World Tour.
Competing in the -100kg category, Lovell-Hewitt defeated Louis Mai (GER) in the opening-round after the German judoka was judged to have performed a head dive and was disqualified. Lovell-Hewitt was then defeated by World Championship silver medallist Kyle Reyes (CAN) in the second round.
In the -90kg category, Jamal Petgrave (Westcroft JC; Andy Ede) was defeated by Robert Florentino (DOM) in Golden Score after the Brit was awarded a third shido.
Three shidos also saw Emma Reid (Redbridge JC; Steve Sandy) exit the competition in the opening round of the -78kg category as she was defeated by Samanta Soares (BRA).
Also in the -78kg category, Natalie Powell (Irfon JC) was defeated by former IJF Masters champion Fanny Estelle Posvite (FRA) in round two, following an opening round bye. Posvite registered a waza-ari score on the buzzer to progress to the quarter-finals.
