Tough final day at the IJF Masters
December 22, 2022
It was a tough final day for our GB judoka at the IJF Masters in Jerusalem. Natalie Powell (Irfon; Mark Earl)and Emma Reid (Redbridge JC; Steve Sandy) were in action in the -78kg category, whilst Jamal Petgrave (Westcroft JC; Andy Ede) fought in the -90kg category.
Powell eased through her opening-round contest against Alina Boehm (GER). Powell took a little over 60 seconds to book her place in Round 2 after applying a strangle to force Boehm to concede the contest.
Powell was defeated in Round 2 by 3x, and current, World Champion and 2x Masters champion Mayra Aguiar (BRA). Powell was countered in the opening exchange and thrown for ippon score.
Also in the -78kg category, Reid was defeated by Rio Olympic silver medallist Audrey Tcheumeo (FRA) in the opening round. Tcheumeo progressed courtesy of two waza-ari scores.
There was also an opening-round defeat for Petgrave who conceded a waza-ari against Rafael Macedo (BRA) who transitioned into newaza. Petgrave defended well, but Macedo eventually forced an arm lock, forcing Petgrave to tap out and concede the contest.
