Young bows out in the opening round
May 08, 2023
Day two of the International Judo Federation (IJF) World Championships in Doha, Qatar, saw the first GB judoka in action as Charlie Young (Ryecroft Judokwai; Paul Young) was in action in the -66kg category.
Following some impressive performances on the European circuit, Young recently made the step up to the world stage.
Drawn in Pool A, Young had a tough opening round contest against 2017 World Championship bronze medallist, Tal Flicker (ISR).
Both judoka picked up a shido in the opening exchanges before Flicker forced Young to the edge of the mat and produced a shoulder throw to register a waza-ari score as the contest neared the midway point.
In the closing stages of the contest Flicker picked up a second shido but Young was unable to register a score or force a third shido to progress in the contest.
Day three will see two GB Judoka in action in the -57kg category as World 2017 bronze and 2018 silver medallist Nekoda Smythe-Davis (Ealing Judo Club; Jo Crowley) makes her return to the World Championship stage, facing Daria Kurbonmamadova (AIN) in the opening round. Whilst 2022 Masters 7th place finisher, Lele Nairne (Bradley Stoke; Pete Douglas), makes her second World Championship appearance. Drawn in Pool A, Nairne will face Thauany-David Capanni-Dias (ITA) in her opening round contest.
